| Player's comments: | Born on December 28th, 1966, Kaliopi first
became popular at the age of 9, by winning the children's festival "Golden
Nightingale" in 1976, with a song titled "Mojata ucitelka [My Teacher]".
Over the next 8 years, she sang classical music, both solo and as part of a chorus. She
won several prizes.In 1984, she formed a band [also called "Kaliopi"] with her
future husband, Romeo Grill. They had several major hits in the 80s, including
"Rodjeni [Darling]", "Kofer ljubavi [A Suitcase of Love]", "Mi se
tako dobro... [We're So Good at...]", "Emanuel" [which took part in the
1987 Yugoslav Eurovision preselection] and "Leo", several of which won major
prizes at international music festivals [including Yugoslavia, Greece, the USSR and
Tunisia among others]. They produced two best-selling albums, one self-titled, the other "Rodjeni [Darling]", before marrying and moving to Switzerland in 1989. Kaliopi returned to the Macedonian music scene in 1996, winning Skopje 1996, with "Samo ti [Only You]". She had minor hits over the next few years before releasing the album "Oboi me [Paint Me]" in 2000. The latter was a major success and brought her several awards. The follow-up, titled "Ako denot mi e nok [If My Day Turns to Night]" was released in 2001 and made her a national icon and the most beloved personality in the country. Earlier this year, she released an album of her Macedonian tour, titled "Najmila - Kaliopi Live". |
