Adiafa - As meninas da Ribeira do Sado

Country - PORTUGAL     Player- Pedro

The bomb wrecks and the rocket goes in the air
It blows up and gets all burned
There's nobody that dances better
Than the girls from the Sado river
The girls from the Sado river are the ones
They cultivate the land with their toe nails
The girls from the Sado river are like the sheeps
They have fleas behind their ears

It was one of those very boring days
When the Sun was very strong on the heads
The girls said I was mad
And they said "Never come here again"
But I came back, and I entertained myself dancing with three
They wanted me to go behind the deck
But I didn't and I told them to go give a bath to my canary
Who died with pain in one egg

Player's comments: ADIAFA comes from Arab ad_diafa, and it's a legacy we herited
from our Arab ancestors who sow traditions and costumes mostly in
Algarve and Alentejo. It's a gift, a gratification, a solidary gesture
of the landlords and the land men.
But ADIAFA is mostly a celebration. A celebration of the
conviviality between rural workers that sazonally went to Alentejo, from
the 4 corners of Portugal, to do the most importante agricultural jobs,
specially the scythe and the olive getting. A celebration of gratitude
that the rural proprietaries had to this people that went from their
families and lands to execute hard works.
ADIAFA was a hymn to the work humanization, a party of
friendship and an exaltation of the land and its richness, of the bread,
of the wine, of the meat, of the olive oil. More than a meal offered to
the workers, ADIAFA brang together in the same time and place cultures,
sensibilities and affections of rude-hands men, of warm heart and
singing soul, to throw away life difficulties and bring the joy of
dreams...

The 6 ADIAFA members have from 27 to 52 years old. Some of them
studied classical music, others always were involved in folk music, one
of them sang at marriage and baptism parties. One of them, Luís Espinho,
was member of "Green Windows", together with José Cid. They sing
traditional songs from Alentejo.
This popular ironic song is a HUGE success in Portugal. Because
of this song, their CD was #1 here for 5 weeks !!!! Now it's the time
for Online Song Contest discover ADIAFA, and dance together will all
people in Portugal to "As meninas da Ribeira do Sado".
